How to Increase Yield? Pots and Growing Media (Part Three)

Cultivation of cannabis other than industrial hemp is prohibited in Poland. Cultivation of industrial hemp requires an appropriate permit. By reading this guide, we assume that you possess such permission or intend to obtain it before starting any cultivation.

Remember that the order of issues in our series is not accidental. We start with the most important elements that have the greatest impact on the quality and quantity of the yield.

After choosing the growbox and the appropriate lamp, the next crucial step to maximize the quality and quantity of the harvest is selecting the right pot size, transplanting early into the final container, and using properly chosen growing media.

Remember — the bigger the plant underground, the bigger it is above the ground.
The root system is the foundation of the entire plant — it determines growth speed, plant strength, nutrient uptake and the final yield quality.

Which pots for small seedlings?

For germination, we recommend specialist trays such as EazyPlug.
They ensure the highest germination rates. After germination (usually 2–4 days), once the first round leaves appear, you can transfer the EasyPlug cubes into larger pots.

It is best to use the final pot right from the beginning.
Even a few days in a small container results in noticeable differences in growth compared to plants placed in larger pots at the same time.

Of course, when using two or more lamps, small pots at the start can save electricity — since all plants can fit under one light instead of two or three. However, in most cases, it is better to use the final pot immediately.

If you must use intermediate pots, make sure they are as large as possible, especially for autoflowering plants, which do not allow extending the vegetative phase in case of mistakes.

Does pot size affect the yield?

Yes. Pot size — and even its shape — affects the yield.
This applies to both quantity and quality.

The larger the pot, the more space the roots have. The bigger the root system, the bigger the plant and the harvest.

A pot for a photoperiod (full-season) plant should start at 14 liters and be as wide as possible.

Which growing media should you choose?

Which soil should be used for cannabis?

For beginners, we strongly recommend LightMix-type growing media, such as:

  • BioBizz LightMix

  • Canna Terra Professional

These are pre-fertilized substrates containing perlite, offering stable and predictable characteristics.
They help avoid the most common beginner mistake — over-fertilization.

Strongly fertilized soils carry the risk of uneven nutrient distribution in the bag, which may lead to overfeeding the plants, even if you have not added any fertilizers yet.

The consequences include:

  • growth inhibition,

  • yellowing leaves,

  • poor root development,

  • reduced yield.

That’s why LightMix is the best and safest choice, especially at the beginning.

Can soil properties be improved?

Yes. To increase soil aeration, add 10–30% coco coir, e.g. from Plagron or BioBizz.

Coco improves:

  • substrate aeration,

  • root development,

  • water retention,

  • nutrient uptake.

Using professional soil from deep excavations, like the ones available in our store, guarantees safety against:

  • pests,

  • bacteria,

  • microorganisms,

  • contamination,

  • unstable pH levels.

High-quality soil has stable chemical properties, resulting in better nutrient absorption.

Summary of Part Three

✔️ pot size directly affects yield
✔️ best practice: plant directly into the final pot
✔️ coco improves soil structure and aeration
✔️ LightMix is the best choice for beginners
✔️ root system = yield — never ignore the substrate
